Sri Lanka’s new president, Ranil Wickremesinghe, is rolling out a QR code digital ID program to access gas for fuel rationing.

Sri Lankans will then be forced to take turns getting fuel based on the last digit of their vehicle registration numbers. However, tourists and foreigners will be given priority in obtaining fuel in Colombo (Sri Lanka’s largest city), which is likely to avoid further damage to Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.

Armed guards are reportedly helping implement a fuel rationing program with a QR code digital ID. They were also previously placed at gas stations and equipped with military weapons to prevent those with “non-essential vehicles” from buying gasoline.

Wickremesinghe warned in May that the bankrupt country was running out of fuel and would face even greater difficulties in the coming months.

The new prime minister then issued a series of statements on Twitter, alerting the country’s 21 million people to prepare for a 15-hour power outage and life becoming “unpleasant and terrifying.”

The President of Sri Lanka, Wickremesinghe, is a member and “Agenda Writer” of the World Economic Forum.
