Creepy Bill Gates warns of other pandemics far worse than Covid-19 – urges government to boost vaccine stocks.
According to the Financial Times, on Tuesday, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned of potential pandemics far more serious than COVID-19 and urged “governments to commit billions to fight future pathogens and boost vaccine supplies.”
In 2015, Gates warned that the biggest potential killer the world could ever face would not be war, but a pandemic. Gates claimed he felt terrible when only a few listened to him as he warned world leaders about infectious diseases.
Last year, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation released its annual report urging countries to invest more in health systems, including vaccines.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Wellcome Trust are providing $300 million to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation (CEPI). CEPI has invested in 14 vaccine candidates, 11 of which are still in active development. AstraZeneca, Moderna and Novavax were funded by CEPI.
“The only real solution to this problem is to have factories capable of producing enough products for the whole world in 100 days,” Gates said. “And it’s doable.”
Gates said that while the Omicron and Delta variants of the coronavirus were among the most transmissible viruses ever, the world may have had to face a pathogen causing a much higher rate of death or severe illness.
He added that many of the innovations aimed at preparing for a future pandemic could also be useful in addressing existing global health problems, for example, through the development of an HIV vaccine and more effective vaccines against tuberculosis and malaria.
