The Golden Globes won’t even air on TV on Sunday – the show was canceled after backlash due to “lack of variety.”
NBC announced last year that it would not air the 2022 Golden Globes due to backlash over lack of diversity. NBC pays $60 million annually to broadcast the Golden Globes, but they have decided to close the 2022 Globe.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has been criticized over the past couple of years for not having blacks in its organization. Of the 87 members, none are black.
“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to serious reform,” an NBC spokesman said in a statement. “However, changing this scale takes time and effort, and we strongly believe that HFPA will take time to get it right. As such, NBC will not be broadcasting the 2022 Golden Globes. If the organization fulfills its plan, we hope to be able to air the show in January 2023.”
The controversial Golden Globe looks set to return this weekend, but no one will see it online or on TV.
Moreover, when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announces the winners of this year’s Golden Globes on January 9, there will be no celebrities. No celebrity agreed to attend the ceremony, sources say.
“The event will have a limited number of guests and with strict COVID protocols that include not only confirmation of full vaccination, but also booster vaccinations and negative PCR results,” the email said.
