Blockages, crumbling supply chains, nervous consumers: The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a massive economic downturn around the world. However, one sector has proven immune to the virus: the arms industry.
This is confirmed by the latest report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) on the world’s 100 largest arms manufacturers.
In 2020, the top 100 arms manufacturers had sales of $531 billion (€469 billion), more than Belgium’s production. Approximately 54% of these are accounted for by 41 US companies in the top 100 SIPRI. The main companies in the industry are in the United States: Lockheed Martin alone sold more than $58 billion in weapons systems last year – more than Lithuania’s GDP.
