Australia passes massive internet surveillance law

The Australian Senate has passed controversial legislation giving law enforcement new and powerful oversight powers, including 60 proposed House amendments.

“No one is immune from these new laws,” Senator Thorpe said when the bill was first proposed last year. “It will affect grassroots communities across the country, it will affect children. This will affect anyone who illegally downloads a movie over the Internet – they can go to prison for five years.”
